Up the River… Down the River

Four intrepid, or perhaps crazy travellers, had sailed from Lamu to Malindi, and then cycled sixty miles to Sala gate where our Great Walk of Africa safari ends. From this point they needed a little help to walk across Tsavo East and West National Parks, so with Alex guiding them, they reversed our Great Walk route upriver.
Neither blistering hot conditions, nor blistered feet could stop them. Fabulous game sightings inspired them, Kahiu's wonderful food, and the odd Tusker beer and glass of chilled Pinot Grigio revived them.
Fourteen memorable days and 200 kilometres later they reached Chyulu gate with Tsavo finally behind them. An impressive achievement, worth celebrating, but no time for the four to rest; they were immediately back on their bicycles, heading towards the Rift Valley and onwards to the distant shores of Lake Turkana.
The dust had yet to settle from their bicycles when eight Tropical Ice clients flew into Tsavo to be guided by Iain on a Great Walk of Africa safari, this time following our time-honoured route down the river. Joining us was Julie McIntosh, owner of The Classic Safari Company in Sydney, our Australian agent.
We had a wonderful ten day walk, and just as Alex's group had experienced before us, the wildlife was amazing: elephants, lions, and herds of literally hundreds of zebra and fringe-eared oryx.
It's definitely time to drag our bags out of our cupboards. It's time to move forward out of our Covid comfort zones, and live life again. Enough is enough...we've lost two years, and people are starting to see that it can be done. We proved it with our visitors last summer, and we proved it these past few weeks.
